INSIDE THE GREENHOUSE | Re-telling climate change stories

Issue #22

We hope you’re all doing as well as you can as the Northern Hemisphere summer arrives and the World Meteorological Organization forecasts that “there is a 66% probability that global average surface temperatures will exceed the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target during one of the next five years” due to an El Niño cycle beginning alongside ongoing human contributions to climate change.

Nonetheless, with your support we at Inside the Greenhouse (ITG) resolutely carry on with our work to meet people where they are and ‘re-tell climate change stories’ from a range of perspectives in order to help make sense of 21st century climate challenges and to inspire great climate engagement and action.

Below you’ll find some updates regarding our ongoing research, teaching and engagement over the past months. Visit our website http://www.insidethegreenhouse.org/ for further details as well. We continue to carry out these projects through important collaborations and partnerships linking campus and community as well as the local with the global.

Issue #20

We hope you’re all doing as well as you can as these difficult and pressurized pandemic times continue into a third year. Our heart goes out to everyone, especially those directly impacted: the global COVID-19 pandemic has changed all of our lives.

Amid the pandemic, atrocities in Ukraine, racially motivated mass shootings in the United States (US), shortages of necessities for young families and more, we remain firmly aware that climate change too remains pressing and urgent. During this extended period of accelerated learning and intense behavior change, we update you on our ongoing efforts to promote creative – and ultimately – effective climate communications, and to improve and inspire environment for communication about climate change in our everyday lives.

We at Inside the Greenhouse (ITG) resolutely carry on with our work to meet people where they are and share climate stories from a range of perspectives in order to help make sense of 21st century climate challenges and to inspire great climate engagement and action. With the 2020 – 2021 academic year now behind us, we send our very best wishes to this year’s graduating class and many of the students who have been member of Inside the Greenhouse through classes, events, internships, and more!

Needless to say, this year has been challenging for all on many fronts. Here at Inside the Greenhouse, our commitment to creative climate communication is as strong as ever. In this issue, you will learn about the work and fun we’ve had together!

Issue #18

Despite the tragedies surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as well as human-induced climate change, Inside the Greenhouse (ITG) has managed to pivot into largely online environments in order to continue building momentum and progress for enhanced climate engagement through our work. This challenging Fall 2020 semester has nonetheless been a time where we have continued with our research, teaching, (remote) events and other creative endeavors to continue to 're-tell climate change stories' in compelling and resonant ways.

For example, this past month we have partnered with Green Shoots and Fashion TV to produce content for their sustainable fashion series beginning December 15. Our involvement is being led by ITG intern Presley Church (see ITG newsletter #17 for more about Presley), the first contribution can be seen here.

Read more below on some updates on new research outputs, reflections on our Fall classes, project updates, other announcements and our ITG student/alum spotlight. And check out our website for even more!

Issue #17

This summer – amid many intersecting challenges in our world – we have continued to move forward with Inside the Greenhouse  efforts in the spaces of research, teaching and engagement in the spaces of creative climate communications in the public sphere.

Among those intersections, we recognize that successfully advancing climate change engagement in the 21st century requires confrontation with environmental and institutional racism. With that in mind, Inside the Greenhouse expresses its profound support of Black Lives Matter (and the many movements towards racial justice that improve our world) by sharing these sources to support the integration of anti-racism into the communication of climate change.

In newsletter #17, we share some highlights of our many ongoing activities. Visit our website http://www.insidethegreenhouse.org for further details and more information. We continue to carry out these projects through valued collaborations and partnerships linking campus and community as well as the local with the global.

Issue #16

We hope you’re all doing as well as you can in this difficult and pressurized pandemic times. Our heart goes out to everyone, especially those directly impacted: the global COVID-19 pandemic has changed all of our lives. This current COVID-19 crisis has shown how fragile we are – as individuals, communities, countries and global systems – to major shocks. Over the past months we have been learning many painful and important lessons.

While we necessarily partake in urgent behavior changes needed to minimize the spread of the novel coronavirus, we’re solemnly aware that climate change too remains pressing and urgent. While it may feel difficult to confront the climate crisis as we face this current COVID-19 crisis, there are critical reasons to continue to confront both.

Issue #15

To date, challenges associated with climate change have continued to impact all aspects of life. As 2019 comes to a close, we acknowledge that the collective scale of our creative efforts to confront the causes and consequences of a changing climate has not been commensurate with the scale of these intersectional climate challenges. However, in partnerships and spirited collaboration with others around the world such as frontline communities, youth and decision-makers at many scales, we at Inside the Greenhouse (ITG) have continued to build momentum and hope as we work to catalyze positive changes that help close this climate action gap.

Issue #14

This summer has been hot; our work Inside the Greenhouse has continued to heat up as well. We are happy to share with you another update regarding our ongoing efforts in the spaces of research, teaching and engagement in the spaces of creative climate communications in the public sphere.

Issue #10

Moving forward in 2018, we at Inside the Greenhouse continue our work to meet people where they are and ‘re-tell climate change stories’ from a range of perspectives. As a key part of our ongoing efforts, we remain steadfast in our commitment to help students build confidence and competence in order to deepen our understanding of how to effectively address issues associated with climate change.

Below you’ll find some updates regarding our ongoing research, teaching and engagement over these first months of the year.

Issue #9

As 2017 ends, it is as important as ever to meet people where they are and ‘re-tell climate change stories’ from a range of perspectives. Through Inside the Greenhouse (ITG), we have pursued these objectives while providing opportunities for students and the wider public citizenry to make sense of changes in our climate and environment.

We in the ITG project recognize that we all are implicated in and responsible for causes and consequences of 21st century climate change. We nurture ITG as a place for growing new ideas and evaluating possibilities to confront climate change through a range of creative communication approaches.

This autumn has been a very productive time at ITG. Read on for some samplings of our fall activities and ongoing commitments.

Issue #8

In these uncertain times, Inside the Greenhouse works to deepen our understanding of how issues associated with climate change are/can be communicated, by creating artifacts through interactive theatre, film, fine art, performance art, television programming, and systematically appraising as well as extracting effective methods for multimodal climate communication. Through both research and practice in these ways, our efforts advance wider interdisciplinary academic communities to build capacity, competence and confidence in CU Boulder undergraduate and graduate student communicators with whom we primarily work.

Issue #7
